CRAZY8S 2022 Gala Screening & AfterParty

Crazy8s 2023 Gala Screening and AfterParty will take place April 15, 2023.

RECAP OF CRAZY8S 2022 GALA SCREENING & AFTERPARTY May 7, 2022

Thank you everyone that attended the first Crazy8s in-person Gala since 2020, all 1,600 of you!

Doors opened at 6pm at The Centre where people caught up with each other after a long two years. Inside the theatre they viewed the logos, ads and videos of our almost 100 generous sponsors that help make Crazy8s possible. At 7pm our Gala host, Jill Morrison (Meangirls, Consumer), took the stage and wowed the audience with her energy and humour.

Next up she invited up to the stage our esteemed guest speakers which included Bob D’Eith, British Columbia Parliamentary Secretary for Arts and Film; Pete Fry, City of Vancouver Deputy Mayor; Allan Harmon, Chair, Directors Guild of Canada, BC District Council; Lauren Davis, Telefilm Canada Western Regional Feature Film Executive; Selina Crammond, Creative BC Program Analyst; and Angela Moore, UBCP/ACTRA Board Member.

Five members of the Crazy8s Board present, President Marc Stephenson, Treasurer Leah Mallen, Amanda Tapping, Allan Harmon and new Board member Sabrina Furminger, came up to thank sponsors as well as out-going Crazy8s Co-Executive Directors Paul Armstrong (2013-2022) and Erin Mussolum (2018-2022).

And now it was time for the Crazy8s 2022 Top 6 films themselves, preceded by the legendary Crazy8s Behind the Scenes video, Behind the Six, directed by Maxime Beauchamp (Small Fish) with interviews of the 6 directors conducted by Daniel Irving (Mr. James is Dead).

After the BTS we went straight into the first 3 films, Imran and Alykhan by Shakil Jessa; The Gold Teeth by Alireza Kazemipour; and Weeds Are Flowers, Too by Kay Shioma Metchie.

Following a 10 minute intermission with behind the scenes stills playing on the screen, we dove into the final 3 films, Undeveloped by Derek Macdonald; The Faraway Place by Kenny Welsh; and finally Consumer by Stephanie Izsak.

The directors, writers, producers and lead actors then took the stage to be introduced to and fetted, and photographed, by the audience, which raved at the films and filmmakers.

With the show ending at The Centre, over 1,100 people made their way to the AfterParty at Science World, many via the On Set Headsets Party Bus. Upon entering the Circus-themed Party decorated by event manager extraordinaire Michael Wipf, attendees were greeted by top-hatted Ringmaster David C. Jones as he pointed them to the famous Crazy8s Red Carpet with photos by Wendy D during the early rush.

After passing by the 6 film posters and a Circus cannon, attendees partook of specialty beverages by Lavish Liquid and danced on the Picture Shop Mainstage like they hadn’t danced in two years. Music on the Mainstage and on the Chill Out Stage was by the incredible spinnings of DJ Krista, DJ Apollo, DJ Horsegirl, DJ Dood plus Musical Artist CR Avery. And this year to tie in with our Circus theme we had astonishing performances by Hula Hoop Artist Renee Mak, Contortionist Stephanie Van Dyck, Contact Juggler Chris Murdoch and Fire Juggler Curtis Christenson and a stilt walker.

For those hungry, Triple O’s was where it was at.

Wrapping up at 2am, it was a Gala no one will forget.

And thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who help make this happen along with the staff at The Centre and Science World.
