About Crazy8s

Crazy8s is an 8-day filmmaking challenge and a five-month program that provides support and funding to emerging and mid-career or transitioning filmmakers to help them produce a professional-quality short film. The Crazy8s program is run by the Crazy8s Film Society, a registered BC not-for-profit society with a core belief in equality, diversity, and community. Crazy8s was created in 1999 by the DGC BC to foster support for emerging filmmakers who have little or no access to funding and resources to make short films. 151 films have been made to date. Crazy8s 2025 is presented by the DGC BC. Fast. Fun. Crazy8s!

Welcome to Crazy8s 2025

Grace Chin

“A funny thing happened on my way to the theatre…” Back in the day, everybody’s Netflix was vaudeville, the rowdy American cousin to the scandalous live variety stage shows of the Moulin Rouge era. Vaudeville venues became the first movie theatres, but during the transition from stage to silent film to talkies, a “night at the theatre” offered a little of everything—a vaudeville act would precede the screening, delivering a slapstick, titillating, or satirical take on the movie’s themes for a seamless segue, if a little on the nose. Many vaudevillians, rather than losing their shirts with the changing times, found a different sort of success and fame on-air and on screen. (You may have heard of some funny dudes called the Marx Brothers.)

The films from this year’s Crazy8s Top 6 filmmakers, and the filmmakers themselves, embody the spirit of this enterprising time of transition that gave rise to our industry. They show us six very different takes on turning life’s twists around, toward audacious outcomes that make us look a little closer, dig a little deeper, laugh a little harder, hug it out a little more.

The Crazy8s team is proud to have played a part in helping these Top 6 teams craft the films you’ll experience tonight. We’re grateful for the support of you, our audience and community; and of all our sponsors, supporters, partners, and donors, without whom we couldn’t do this every year. We’re here for a long time, not just a good time; and every year the films show us not only what’s possible, but what our indie community and industry achieve when we work together to shape our cinematic future.

Welcome to the Crazy8s 2025 Gala!

Greetings
Greetings From DGC BC

Welcome to the 2025 Crazy8s Gala Screening and After Party! Hopefully I get to congratulate each of the Top 6 teams in-person tonight. In the event that I’m not able to, I appreciate the opportunity to congratulate you all on successfully completing eight crazy days of filmmaking in this message.

The relationship between the Directors Guild of Canada, British Columbia (DGC BC) and Crazy8s has spanned decades, and each iteration of our Executive Board has been proud to lend its support for an initiative that celebrates emerging local talent.

Every Top 6 team, from the Directors, Screenwriters and Producers (shout out to DGC BC Associate Member Jessica To one of the producers on team Headcase), to the Assistant Directors, Location Managers, and Production Assistants, should feel incredibly proud of what they were able to accomplish.

Please enjoy every moment of what is essentially your joint wrap party and world premieres. Everyone on the DGC BC Executive Board might not be able to enjoy the screening with you tonight, but I’m sure there will be plenty of opportunities to see your films on the festival circuit!

Congratulations, and keep creating.

We’re proud to return as a presenting sponsor of Vancouver’s iconic short film competition, now celebrating an incredible 26 years of championing local talent and storytelling.

Since day one, Crazy8s has played a pivotal role in advancing filmmaker careers, strengthening B.C.’s film culture, and contributing to the growth of our province’s motion picture industry. Creative BC is honoured to support this inspiring initiative, which has helped bring more than 100 short films to life and continues to spotlight the next generation of B.C. creators.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the dedicated team behind Crazy8s—from the organizers and volunteers to the partners, audiences, and fellow sponsors. Your collective effort makes this remarkable platform possible and keeps our creative community thriving.

Crazy8s is more than just a filmmaking challenge. It’s a place where real connections are made, bold ideas are realized, and emerging voices are amplified. Together, we’re empowering local creators to tell meaningful stories, take creative risks, and bring B.C.’s talent to the world stage—at a time when the appetite for fresh, authentic content is stronger than ever.

As we celebrate 26 years of Crazy8s, we’re reminded why this community matters: for the stories, the people, and the ongoing energy that drives our industry forward. Here’s to another unforgettable year!

Gala Host

Grace Dove

Grace Dove is an Indigenous Actress and Director who has embraced a responsibility to lift up her audience and her community.

In 2015 she co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy in the Oscar-winning film The Revenant. Other recent film credits include the Netflix thriller How It Ends (2018). In 2020 she appeared in her first leading role in the feature film adaptation of Eden Robinson’s novel Monkey Beach. Her past television credits include a series lead beside Hilary Swank on ABC Alaska Daily.

In 2020 Dove made her directorial debut with the well-received short film Kiri and The Girl, which debuted at the Vancouver International Film Fest and is currently streaming on Apple TV.

Dove recently wrapped filming the five-part limited series Bones of Crows, where she stars as Cree Matriarch “Aline Spears”. Bones of Crows tells the story of Spears’ childhood as she survives Canada’s residential school system to continue her family’s generational fight in the face of systemic starvation, racism, and sexual abuse.

She also facilitates her youth-empowerment program “Thunderbird Dreams” in communities, directing short films that are unique to each Nation. “I had the dream of becoming an actress, and to tell stories of Indigenous resilience. I created the vision, and I didn’t let anyone tell me it’s not possible.”

Crazy8s Afterparty

Following the Gala Screening, head over to Science World for your time to shine at our “vaudeville at the movies“ inspired Afterparty—Vancouver’s largest single-evening film and television industry party! Strike a pose at our photo booth, poster gallery and selfie station. The on-site Triple O’s will be open and offering their full menu all evening!
Come celebrate this year’s filmmakers, and our 26th year, with us!

Grab the afterparty bus, sponsored by On Set Headsets, from right outside The Centre. Buses run in a loop from The Centre to Science World and back again, approximately every 15 minutes for about an hour after the screening concludes.

Message from the 2025 Board

The Board of the Crazy8s Film Society welcomes you to the 2025 Crazy8s Gala. You are in for a treat of another 6 amazing short films from our vibrant local film community. Congratulations to all the filmmakers this year on all your talent and hard work. We look forward to seeing the films tonight and on the festival circuit and distribution over the coming years.

These films could not be made without the support of all our sponsors, so a deep thank you to all those who stepped up this year to help these films get made. Let this evening and the continued success of the films act as a showcase of what the community can do when it works together to help foster the training and artistic expression of our next generation of filmmakers who will continue to make British Columbia, and Canada, one of the leading filmmaking centres in the world.

Thank you too of course to Executive Director Grace Chin, and the rest of the Crazy8s team she has assembled, for another outstanding, well-run year of the Crazy8s program.

And to all the potential filmmakers and sponsors in the audience tonight, do not hesitate to get involved next year so that the legacy of Crazy8s can continue next year getting stronger and stronger and we can showcase what you do best.

Telefilm Talent To Watch

Four years ago Crazy8s Film Society was proud to be included as a Designated Industry Partner organization for Telefilm’s Talent to Watch program which funds feature films. Each year since, Crazy8s alumni directors apply to us for a recommendation letter towards this program. We are thrilled that one of these projects was successful in its application and has recently wrapped production – THE CHINATOWN DINER, directed by Lawrence Le Lam (CYPHER, 2017), written by Lawrence and Alex Love Kink (MR. JAMES IS DEAD, 2020). The film is produced by Thomas Affolter (THE UNDERTAKER’S SON, 2017) and Lynne Lee. The executive producers are Paul Armstrong (Crazy8s, Lawrence & Holloman), Erin Mussolum (Crazy8s, Bye-Bye), Liz Levine (Two Sentence Horror Stories, Hudson & Rex). and Charles Chang. The production manager was Dominique Roy (I CAN’T GO ON, 2023).

Sponsor Support for Crazy8s

As a not-for-profit organization, Crazy8s Film Society is thankful to be supported by close to 100 sponsors, including cash, in-kind, media, and community partners. The Crazy8s program would not exist without the generous support of such a broad spectrum of the British Columbia film industry in the Lower Mainland, as a further opportunity to showcase what our shared filmmaking community and industry can do when it comes together to create great films.

The cash sponsors allow Crazy8s Film Society to operate as a not-for-profit on a modest budget, and to help finance the filmmakers projects, contributing toward the $12,000 total cash that goes to the teams to help finance their Crazy8s films.

We estimate that the in-kind value is approximately $75,000 per team for a total of $450,000 in support. This includes: Production insurance, legal opinions and clearances,, casting direction, production gear and equipment, locations support, special effects support, props and set dressing, radios, and post production finishing services.

Other forms of in-kind support and donations include contributions towards the production of our Behind The Scenes video and promo videos; as well as workshops, mentorships, media coverage, and cross-promotion, bringing the total to over half a million dollars a year in in-kind sponsorship and partnership support.

Crazy8s, and each year’s cohort of filmmakers, are grateful to all the sponsors that support the organization, the program, and the film projects. For the full list of our many sponsors, please see the last few pages of the program guide or visit: crazy8s.film/our-sponsors
